Take Your Next Step With Confidence & Clarity Using Brainspotting Therapy In Mesa, AZ
Brainspotting Helps Us Move From Stuck to Finding Our Flow Again
Have you felt stuck or frazzled, like you’re caught mentally or emotionally in trying to make a decision? Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed or like you’re frozen out of fear of making a mistake–the “wrong decision”. Or perhaps your mind just keeps going on an anxiety loop, overthinking in efforts to get to an understanding that will help you move forward. I know I’ve been there – we all have. It’s part of the human experience. But, it’s draining and time consuming.
There’s an incredible way to shift out of this experience and into the insight, ease and flow that resides within you.
I’d love to shed light on Brainspotting therapy–a neuro-experiential method that guides our mind-body to find the answers that we struggle to cognitively generate through analytical thought or talk therapy alone. In fact, Brainspotting is central to my practice and the clients it serves in Mesa, Arizona.
I’ve fallen in love with this method, which uses gaze spots in our visual field–or “brainspots”--that safely and gently access the deep regions of our brain where insight and answers lie. When you’re on a brainspot, it’s amazing how answers and insights arise that can help us take our next step. It’s safe, gentle, effective, and frankly–super cool (to put it in the vernacular!).
Since introducing Brainspotting at my practice, Calm Hearts Counseling in Mesa, I’ve received consistently positive feedback from my clients who, after using Brainspotting, have found more flow and ease beyond what talk therapy can offer.
I hear things like: “The connection I’m making about this situation is really about x, y, z….” (insight that wouldn’t come from talk therapy alone) and “I feel like I’m walking on Cloud Nine after the session; I’m lighter and clearer!” and “I feel so deeply at peace. So relaxed.”
What Actually Happens in Brainspotting?
Echoing from above, Brainspotting is a somatic (body-centered) therapy developed by Dr. David Grand that uses specific eye positions, known as “brainspots,” to help identify and process unresolved emotional experiences or places where our brain and nervous system are “stuck” (hello, overthinking!). We’re often stuck due to a combination of a negative thought + emotion. But we don’t just focus on the problem in Brainspotting. Using eye positions can help us access and “resource” the aspirational, wise, or courageous parts of us.
Overall, Brainspotting’s guiding principle is simple: where you look affects how you feel.
When I guide clients through a Brainspotting session, they'll listen to soothing music (always optional) and are invited to notice physical sensations, emotions, thoughts and internal experiences as they focus a specific eye position. During this process, the brain and nervous system begin releasing stored distress, negative beliefs, or fears about making decisions. This all happens naturally and gently; the deeper part of the brain, called the subcortex, leads the way. There’s no forcing anything to happen, and there’s no set agenda. We simply hold the intention for inner shifts or clarity to occur. This may feel or seem a little obtuse–but let me tell you, it’s such profound work.
Brainspotting Facilitates Personal Flow
Unlike traditional talk therapy where we use just one part of our brain, Brainspotting doesn’t depend on analyzing thoughts or talking about our inner conflicts as to what next to do, where to go. In a Brainspotting session, all that’s needed is stating the conflict and, if we’re choosing a secondary brainspot (like a “solution spot”), what the answer would feel like (ie: relief, freedom, ease, energized, etc).
Once you’re on your brainspot, all that’s needed is openness, curiosity and compassion as you allow insights, answers to arise.
Taking Your Next Step
I’ve witnessed the shift between working with clients in a space where we’re talking about the conflict or decision-making conundrum (cognitive-based therapy) and inviting clients to use Brainspotting and the outcomes are vastly different. Brainspotting allows clients to quickly, gently, and effectively access their inner wisdom in such a way that talk therapy just doesn’t reach. This aligns with my belief that within each of us lies our answers–and not in the therapist!
